Architectural Interior Review
A pre-construction assessment that examines how your home will function once furnished, inhabited and fully realised — before the project moves into technical commitment.
For private clients who have completed the architectural design of a new home and want to validate how it will actually live.
Architectural Interior Reviews are delivered by Helena Smith, an interior designer with over 19 years’ experience working on private residential projects ranging from complex refurbishments to multi-million-pound new builds.
Structural Reality
You Are Entering the Most Committed Phase of the Project
At this stage:
The architecture is defined.
The layout feels resolved.
The project is preparing to move into technical development and procurement.
What has not yet been examined is how those decisions will perform once the house is occupied, furnished and used every day.
Architectural plans resolve envelope, planning and structure.
Interior strategy interrogates how that structure will be lived in.
Before interior analysis:
- Furniture may be illustrated at optimistic scale
- Bathrooms can appear generous until real fittings are considered
- Kitchens look impressive on plan but lack operational logic
- Circulation feels acceptable until layouts are stress-tested
- Storage is assumed rather than interrogated
- Interior investment is rarely aligned to expectation
These are not structural issues.
They are spatial and strategic ones.
And they are significantly more complex to adjust once structure is fixed.
At Architectural Stage, a Home Exists as Layout and Proportion
Architectural design establishes form, structure and planning compliance. At this point, the house is understood in terms of space, geometry and envelope.
The Architectural Interior Review considers how that framework will support occupation and day-to-day use. It examines:
How spaces will be used rather than simply arranged
How movement, storage and daily routines will operate
The level of interior resolution the architecture will require to feel complete
Where early assumptions may create friction once lived in
How investment can be prioritised to achieve coherence as the project develops
It is not a redesign.
It is an assessment of whether the house you are about to build will support the way you intend to live.
Why This Happens Now — Not Later
Once technical coordination begins, even modest adjustments start to carry programme, cost and consultant implications.
Before that point, the same considerations remain straightforward to incorporate.
This review is positioned deliberately between architectural completion and technical commitment — when insight can still be integrated with clarity.
This is the point in a project where considered adjustments remain proportionate to make, yet can materially influence how the house will ultimately perform.
Why Helena Smith Interiors Undertakes This Work
Helena Smith Interiors specialises in the design of private residential projects where architecture and interior resolution are considered together from an early stage.
This review applies that same perspective at the point where architectural design is complete, ensuring the next phase of decisions builds upon a well-considered foundation.
Scope of the Review
Project Briefing Consultation (60–90 minutes)
Understanding how the design has evolved, how you expect to live in the house, and where alignment matters most.
Independent Plan Assessment
A structured evaluation of the drawings through an interior and occupation-led lens.
Spatial Function Testing
We test the proposed spaces at real scale against furnishing, circulation and practical use.
Strategic Findings Session
A presentation identifying where refinement would materially improve usability, flexibility or long-term clarity.
Interior Provision & Investment Guidance
Insight into the level of interior provision homes of this scale and intent typically require — and where decisions meaningfully influence outcome and cost trajectory.
The review calibrates structure, lifestyle and interior ambition, providing a clear foundation for the next phase of the project.
Fee
