If you’re planning on undertaking a substantial home renovation or are building a bespoke new home, you have a fantastic opportunity to add some wow factor features to your home. This is your chance to create a home that really reflects you, your personality and how you live. Any special features should be ones that you really love.

Entrance Halls

The entrance hall is one of the most important spaces as it’s where you welcome people into your home. If you have the opportunity to introduce a double height space, do it! Spacious volume is the always impressive and it feels good to enter into buildings with generous volumes. Experientially it then naturally follows to move into more intimate spaces where lower ceilings are appropriate.

Staircases

Giving a generous amount of space to the staircase is often a luxury, but it can have spectacular results if you do. Staircases are inherently viewed from different perspectives and angles, at different times throughout the day. So by their nature they are already theatrical spaces.

This can be enhanced by the way the light changes in the space throughout the day. If the staircase is lit by a large window, the sun moving around the house throughout the day will create a dynamic, dramatic effect on the stairs. Adding a chandelier to the void space of a stair is one of my favourite interventions to a home. Delicate and intricate or bold and impressive, they can emphasise the height of the space as well as lighting it beautifully.

Furniture Talking Points

A scheme can be brought to life and made infinitely more interesting by including a statement piece of furniture. The key here is to choose something you really love. There’s no point having a stand out piece of furniture if it isn’t comfortable or you’re not sure about it. You don't want it to stand out for the wrong reasons, so choose pieces that speak to your tastes. Choose something in a bold colour or a contrasting shape. For example, if your lounge architecture is crisp straight lines, adding in a curved sofa will contrast and soften the space.

Use Atmospheric Lighting

Lighting can completely change the feel of a space. When done well it should adapt to the different uses and moods of a space and adapt as these change throughout the day and night. Integrating different types of lighting is essential to creating different scenes. Lighting needs to be planned in carefully from the start, to ensure that different scenes have the correct levels of light and the right effect is achieved. If you are installing a Home Automation setting these scenes can all be programmed to come on at the press of a button.  Ask an expert if you need help with lighting as it will be worth it to get it right.

Bespoke Joinery

Bespoke joinery is all about creating something tailored perfectly to your space. This in itself will make it special, but there is also an opportunity to create a home with a wow factor feature. Perhaps you want a bar for your entertainment room, or an amazing dressing room for your shoe collection. Consider using luxury materials like stone or speciality timbers to elevate the aesthetics. Done in the right way bespoke joinery can turn the parts of your house that you really love into something really special.

Complete Cohesion

Create a design scheme that seamlessly flows throughout the home, with bespoke detailing that exudes quality. This is possibly one of the hardest to pull off, but most stunning ways to add impact to a home. Creating a personalised design language for your home, is the ultimate in sophisticated design. It should adapt to function and atmosphere as it permeates each space. Choose colours, materials, furniture and lighting cohesively to create a highly personalised home. This can only be achieved through a whole property renovation or when building a bespoke home.
