Luxury Lounges
In this next post I am looking at luxury lounges. There are so many facets to a successful lounge design that I will be going into more detail about specifics of layout, furniture, lighting, textures and palette choices in the future blog posts. For now, I wanted to look at three living rooms that make a great impression. A successful lounge design is a space that is aesthetically stunning but inviting. It wants to be somewhere you love to relax, not somewhere you feel like you’re not allowed to sit down!
Balance and Harmony
The key to these designs, as with our own luxury lounge designs, is balance, with so many elements being brought together, it’s crucial to harmonise the scheme so that nothing detracts from the overall vision. This means carefully considering the layout and how the furniture pieces work together. Layering different materials to create a textural experience and ensuring that everything all the way down to the accessories is in keeping with the colour palette. A lounge is a space constantly in use throughout the day and night. Therefore it’s important to consider the effect of different lighting levels and how these can affect the ambience.
Monochromatic Living
The first of my inspirational lounges is a monochromatic family living space by Kerri Rosenthal Interior Design. The focal point of the room is the bold black wall featuring the tv and the fireplace. This cleverly diminishes the appearance of the TV itself, which can stand out as a black box, by making it part of a large darker feature wall. The rest of the room is softened with beige neutral tones, that make the space light. The contrast between black and beige is blended by the use of dark coloured accessories. For example, the black curtain pole and the dark grey armchair, and even the darker flecks in the rug. Accessories should never be an afterthought, instead as demonstrated here, when carefully considered they can bring the whole scheme together.

Relaxed Glamour
Next up is this relaxed glamorous lounge space by Olga Ashby. This gorgeous lounge is warm and inviting. The key to this scheme is the geometry, the colour palette is kept neutral to make the shapes stand out more. The curves on the coffee table, sofa and vases have been chosen to compliment the arches in the shelving alcoves and of the mezzanine above. The beautiful sheer curtains add softness to the large windows. The lightness off the curtains will mean they waft in the breeze from and open window while still letting light penetrate. Large windows are fantastic for letting in natural light to space, but its important to remember at night windows become large dark planes. Having the right window treatments is key to making a space feel relaxed and cosy.

Sophisticated Elegance
Finally, this sophisticated Sophie Patterson living room is a brilliant example of how to introduce an accent colour into a space. The scheme follows colour ratios, the lightest tone, the neutral of whites, is the primary surface colour. This is contrasted by the darker tones of the joinery, fireplace insert and legs on the coffee table. These darker tones cover the second most surface area. Then there is the colour injection of the tones of royal and navy blue. Woven evenly throughout the space, so the quantity is not overwhelming, colour is present wherever you look. Finally a metallic accent is added, in the brass of the chandelier, wall lights and mirror. Keeping metal finishes minimal makes them touches of luxury rather than becoming abrasive.
The blue patten on the rug is a bold and beautiful, pulling focus to the center of the room. It also makes a feature of a typically background element. The variation of the cushions allows the blue to be used as a colour block, pattern and fringe adding interest. The brocade on the cushion is repeated on the edge of the curtains tying these two elements together. As with our projects every detail of the room has been considered and how it contributes to the whole.

Further Inspiration
Each of the above lounges illustrates how important it is that every element of the scheme is balanced and harmonious. Later in the inspiration series I will be looking at styling and accessories as these have such a significant impact on a lounge scheme.
